Tackle Climate Change: Use Wood

European Wood Action Day

“On 27 March 2012 EPF, CEI-Bois and EOS, organised a high level conference followed by a cocktail reception that marked the launch of actions throughout the European Union. The event took place in Brussels in the exclusive location of the “Club Royale des Officiers du Régiment des Guides” and it aimed at stressing the importance of the use of naturally renewable raw materials, in particular wood, in making an important contribution to the protection of climate and environment.

The high level conference fitted perfectly in the political agenda of the European Commission. On 12 March 2012, the European Commission published its Proposal of Decision on “accounting rules and action plans on greenhouse gas emissions and removals resulting from activities related to land use, land use change and forestry”. Mr Wehrheim, Head of Unit "Finance and deforestation" at DG Climate Action (CLIMA) of the EU Commission, was present at the Action Day’s high level conference and he underlined that he was pleased to speak at this event that is very timely with the major European initiatives.

The event attracted the attention of a large numbers of representatives of the European Institutions, in particular  the Honourable Members of the European Parliament: Mr Andrés Perelló Rodriguez, Mrs Josefa Andres, Mr Enrique Guerrero Salom, Mr Vicente Garcés Ramón, Mr Luis Manuel Capoulas Santos, Mr Luís Paulo Alves and Mr Gaston Franco, as well as Dr. Angel Angelidis, Mr Andreas Gumbert, Mr Ernst Schulte, Mr Peter Wehrheim and Mrs Aulikki Kauppila from the European Commission and finally Mr Josef Zboril, Mr Patrizio Pesci and Mr Brendan Burns, Members of the Economic and Social Committee.

Moreover, on Wednesday 28 March, the “European woodworking industries” delivered a symbolic gift - the wooden cube - and accompanying letters to all Honourable MEPs.  The final text of the message accompanying the wooden cubes is available on this website.

Through this action, EPF, CEI-Bois and EOS aimed at ensuring that the message of the Action Day will reach all Members of the European Parliament in an attractive and professional way, including even the new observers from Croatia.
