On 4 June, CEI-Bois attended the joint public hearing of the European Parliament’s Housing Crisis (EP HOUS Committee) and Internal Market (EP IMCO Committee) committees on safe and sustainable construction materials in the context of Europe’s housing challenges.
Discussions focused on how to meet urgent housing demand through accelerated construction and renovation, with strong emphasis on industrialised building approaches such as off-site and modular construction to improve productivity and reduce delivery times.
CEI-Bois underlines that Europe’s housing crisis requires more housing, faster, achieved through higher construction productivity, scaled-up industrialised construction, and a stronger renovation wave supported by modernised frameworks.
Policy efforts should also prioritise simpler and faster permitting, strengthened European supply chains and performance-based approaches that ensure all sustainable materials can contribute on an equal footing to affordability and decarbonisation goals. These elements are essential to deliver both affordable and sustainable housing while reinforcing Europe’s industrial capacity.
